b. April 3, 1822, in Sangamon County, Illinois; d. September 4, 1892, in Leadville, Colorado. In 1850, Ann Taylor married Charles R. Hurst, a prominent Springfield dry goods merchant in Sangamon County, Illinois. In 1860, they still lived in Sangamon County and owned real estate worth $10,000 and personal property worth $15,000. They had six living children, three boys and three girls. After Charles Hurst retired from the dry goods business in 1877, he bought an interest in a coal mine. He later bought out his partner’s interest and mined and shipped coal until his death in 1881. After her husband’s death, Ann Hurst conducted the coal mining interests along with her three sons. They employed between eighty and one hundred men. Ann Hurst was the daughter of John Taylor, Sangamon County’s first sheriff, and the sister of Jane E. Kreigh, Margaret Taylor, and Hannah Tinsley.
